BLAMEY STAKES PREVIEW

By Tim Hickman
12/03/2010
Steven Arnold has been riding superbly over the last month, including an absolute gem on Capecover in Monday's Adelaide Cup. He takes the ride on website tip Dao Dao.
Racing this Saturday is at Flemington for the Blamey Stakes which will be better known as the Super Saturday Mk II meeting. As mentioned yesterday, the track is likely to be rated dead initially, improving to good, come later Saturday afternoon, so the previews for last Saturday are the same as for today, except for the sad death of Our Aqaleem in a trackwork incident during the week.
Saturday also marks the beginning of the jumping season in Australia, with a hurdle and steeplechase at the magnificent Oakbank track in South Australia. Disappointingly, there will be no jumps races in Victoria prior to the famous Oakbank Easter meeting, but as a result of this the fields for both races on Saturday are pretty good.

For today’s preview, we will look at the Blamey Stakes from Flemington, and the Hurdle at Oakbank.

Comment
Dao Dao ($2.50)
Both runs this time in have been fantastic, clearly the one to beat.
Vigor ($4.60)
Disappointing first up but gets back to the track he loves. Did knock off Typhoon Tracy over a mile last time in, but has a very concerning gear change – “race plates off first time”.
Doctor Fremantle ($15)
Former smart European galloper having his first run for the Freedman stable. Impossible to assess but this is a smart line up.
Lord Tavistock ($16)
Disappointing in the Futurity without being terrible. Place.
Rightfully Yours ($4.20)
Gutsy win first up but a big query at the mile in this grade. Not for me.
Raffaello ($11)
Much improved run last time out but his best form is with the Kavanagh stable.
Life To The Full ($16)
Good run last week but this is considerably tougher.
Hissing Sid ($31)
Further/later.
Leica Larrikin ($61)
No.

Dao Dao is the good thing of the day.
The Hurdle at Oakbank is the second race on that program.

Last Shogun
Has won 3 from 6 over the jumps including the S.A Grand National. Latest flat form has been excellent and he will take a power of beating from the front.
Tradesman’s Choice
Always seems to run well over the jumps in Adelaide but his best form seems to be at Morphettville. Winning chance though.
Governor Boise
Don’t know much about him but Scotty has chosen him out of the four John Wheeler horses in the race, and that has to be respected.
Mephistopheles
Hasn’t really found his form this time in albeit he can improve over jumps. Won this race last year but he was going much better in his lead ups and he may be looking for the fences these days.
Squire Rex
Another Wheeler horse, first up in this race. Personally I find the NZ horses tend to struggle over our hurdles. The good hurdlers over there make chasers over here, and the top chasers don’t have the necessary flat ability. Not saying he can’t win but want to have a look at him first.
Mybigfatgreekhorse
I think he is a couple of rungs below some of his opposition.
Sirrocean Storm
Showed a lot towards the end of last season and rates a winning chance on his best form.
Vanak
Another Wheeler horse, prefer to watch.
Our Raconteur
Handy flat galloper making his jumps debut here. Has chosen a tough race to start his career in.
Ronnie
I’d be surprised.
Tealc
Another debutant, not inclined to back him in this company.
Flying Corkscrew
Immense disappointment as a jumper, no.

I’m quite keen on Last Shogun here.
