ADELAIDE CUP PREVIEW

By Tim Hickman
08/03/2010
Mick Kent trains Montahlia, one of the favourites for today's Adelaide Cup.

The Adelaide Cup was first run in 1864 when won by the appropriately named Falcon. Since then, quite few chaff bandits have won the race, with winners over the last decade representing a who's not of the Australian turf - my favourite old horse Gallic (2007) aside. Notwithstanding that, it is a race that still carries some prestige and a great trophy for the winner.

The first name you think of when it comes to Adelaide Cups is Lord Reims, who won the race three years in a row between 1987 and 1989, as well as the 1987 Caulfield Cup, in which defeated the highly fancied three year old Beau Zam. Melbourne Cup winners to have won the race include Subzero (1992), Just A Dash (1981), Hyperno (1978) and Rain Lover (1968). The great Reckless won in 1977, but he was brought undone by torrental rain on the first Tuesday in November and could only manage second to Van Der Hum.

As far as tomorrow goes, the track is presently rated a Dead 5, but importantly, more rain is scheduled so a downgrade is possible. The track condition will be of critical importance.

Comment
Capecover ($6)
Classy stayer but 57Kg and ordinary 3200m record make me prefer others.
Dolphin Jo ($9)
Not well weighted but last start effort was much improved. Place chance for mine.
Itstheone ($13)
Don’t think he can run two miles.
Right Fong ($19)
Has an unfortunate tendency to mix up his form, and I’m not going to try and catch him here.
Kerdem ($10)
Ran second last year with 2Kg less. His run two starts back was terrific and the race last start was completely dominated from the front. Winning chance and loves it wet.
Brad Star ($21)
The best galloper to be trained out of Millicent In a long time, and his last start effort was a definite improvement. Bolter for multiples.
Moment In Time ($4.80)
Good win in the Lord Reims but goes up in class and up in weight, which is a big ask. Under the odds. Wet ground an advantage.
Fairygem ($10)
Great effort two starts back at Randwick to win in near track record time but only fair in the Mornington Cup. Likes it wet and hard to beat if she gets conditions to suit.
You Beautiful Doll ($101)
Not for me.
De Fine Lago ($7.50)
Late scratching from the Hobart Cup on vets advice, but Vasil thought he was fine to run. Very promising stayer but a month between runs not ideal. Odds fairly representative of his chances.
Montahlia ($6.50)
She manages to beat up on some of her rivals in those 3000m races at the Valley but I’m pretty sure most of these would. I’m a fan of the mare but she is no value at these odds.
Moggaden ($41)
You’d have to be Moggaden to back him.
Nitonic ($34)
If he wins then we ought to ban two mile racing in Australia.
Humaway ($101)
No.
Al Wafi ($21)
Prefer in something easier.
King Of The Sun ($301)
I don’t think so.
Doubly Sure ($61)
Not for me.

I’d have something on both Kerdem and Fairygem at $10 or better.
